To care for our teeth, we all know that we have to brush our teeth at least twice a day, floss to remove food debris in between teeth and visit the dentist regularly. These are common knowledge but are you doing it correctly?

According to the American Dental Association, the following sums up the basics of a good oral hygiene:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day using an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three months.
  • Use interdental cleaners or floss after brushing your teeth to remove the food particles between the teeth and under the gum line.
  • See your dentist regularly for oral exams and cleanings.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet.

Brushing your teeth removes the plaque on the surface of the teeth. However, if you are not thorough with your brushing, the plaque will accumulate on your teeth and beneath the gum lines. The bacteria produced by the plaque will attack the tooth enamel and later on, will cause dental caries. Also, tartar or calculus is likely to form when plaque hardens.

Now, how do you brush your teeth properly?

This is a real no-brainer especially for adults, but for kids, it is important to teach them the proper way of brushing their teeth at a young age.

  • Position the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gums
  • Brush the outer and inner surfaces of the teeth.
  • Do not forget the to brush the chewing teeth at the back portion of the mouth.
  • Brush the tongue to remove remaining food particles.

A good oral hygiene also prevents the occurrence of gum disease which surprisingly is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults. In addition, eating the right kind of foods helps in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Diet and proper oral hygiene are your best defense against cavities and gum disease.
